THE STORY BEHIND
THE BOOK

It didn’t start with a plan it started with a struggle. What followed was a journey of pain, faith, and an unbreakable bond between family.

The Struggle

Addiction changed everything.

The Turning Point

Faith brought new hope.

The Healing

Family, forgiveness and a new beginning.

I am the proud father of three girls and the husband of Aidana. From a young age, I experimented with drugs and eventually developed a severe addiction to fentanyl. The choices I made beginning in adolescence led to multiple felony convictions, the label of habitual criminal, and just under four years of incarceration. After learning about the law of attraction, I overcame a destructive cycle and through gratitude, love, prayer, and recovery, I turned my life around and found a renewed sense of purpose. Today, I use my experience to offer hope and support to others who are struggling. My story is proof that change is possible and that a difficult past can become the foundation for a life of service.

I am the proud mother of four, grandmother of five, wife to Ken, and an early childhood consultant. For more than 25 years, I have served children, families, and educators in leadership roles. I stood by Ryan through his addiction and supported his brothers as they coped with the effects of his choices. When Ryan told me that he wanted to write his story, I told him that I wanted to tell my survival story alongside his. I was once a parent who threw her hands in the air and did not know what to do. I spent sleepless nights not knowing where my child was and countless mornings soothing my swollen eyes after crying myself to sleep. A turning point came when I realized that I needed to bring more hope and positivity into my life so I could support Ryan in pursuing a better outcome. My goal is to help other parents who are struggling with a child’s addiction. I believe there is always hope when we love with our whole hearts.

About the Book

THE STORY OF ONE FAMILY'S JOURNEY THROUGH ADDICTION

I’m Happy I Promise is a story of addiction, survival, faith, family, and the long road toward healing. Told through both Ryan’s per- spective and his mother’s, this book follows choices, shame, fear, consequences, and moments of grace that shaped one family’s journey.

From childhood anxiety and self-destruction to incarceration, relapse, fentanyl addiction, and near-death moments, Ryan shares the truth of what it feels like to lose yourself and still search for a reason to keep going.

Alongside his voice, his mother shares the heartbreak of loving a child through addiction-the fear of unanswered calls, the guilt, the anger, the prayers, and the hope that refused to die. Together, their perspectives reveal how addiction affects not only the person who uses, but everyone who loves them.

Have a Look At What Our Readers Say

Eleanor M.

Senior Librarian

“Ryan’s story is a deeply moving account of addiction and recovery, but at its heart, it is also a story about family and perseverance. What stayed with me most was the honesty with which his journey is presented and the important role his mother played throughout it. This memoir offers a compassionate look at the realities of addiction while ultimately leaving the reader with a powerful sense of hope.”

Patricia L.

Senior Book Reviewer

“Few memoirs make the reader feel the ripple effects of addiction as clearly as this one. Ryan does not present himself as a hero or ask the reader for sympathy. Instead, he looks directly at his mistakes, relapses, relationships, incarceration, and the consequences his choices created. His mother’s voice adds another emotional layer, revealing the fear, guilt, love, and determination that existed alongside his struggle. By the end, the most powerful part of the story is not simply that Ryan survived, but that he began to see himself as someone capable of creating a different future.”

Michael R.

Educationist & Youth Development Specialist

“Ryan’s journey offers an important look at how identity, self-worth, choices, environment, and accountability can shape a young person’s life. What I found particularly valuable was the willingness to examine the experiences and decisions that came before addiction rather than treating it as an isolated problem. The reflection questions throughout the book encourage readers to move beyond simply reading Ryan’s story and consider their own patterns, relationships, and choices. It is a difficult story, but ultimately one about growth and the possibility of change.”
